Educational games often struggle to balance entertainment with their teaching ambitions. Lean too heavily into the lessons, and players lose interest, particularly those with short attention spans. Focus too much on the gameplay, and the educational value becomes little more than a marketing bullet point. Néro & Sci ∫ Integral Edition, developed by Souris-Lab, attempts to walk that fine line by blending puzzle platforming with mathematical logic. Growing up playing games like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, and a few other niche games. I can see that educational games, especially on platforms, are not always well-received, particularly among parents who want a good balance between teaching their kids and helping them enjoy learning.

The game is set in the whimsical world of Heméide. The game follows Néro, a young Synapsian living in the capital city of Curiosita. After accidentally releasing the mysterious Sci and unleashing the Chaos theories hidden within an ancient book, the pair find themselves trapped beneath the surface of their world. Their journey becomes one of escape, discovery, and problem-solving.

A Puzzle Platformer

Néro & Sci ∫ Integral Edition presents players with 36 levels spread across four distinct worlds, each introducing new concepts and increasingly challenging puzzles. At its core, the game combines traditional platforming mechanics with mathematical reasoning.

Néro handles movement, combat, and exploration, while Sci manipulates objects and reveals clues hidden within the White Dimension. This dual-character approach ensures that puzzles rarely rely on a single solution style. Players are encouraged to observe their surroundings, experiment with different ideas, and gradually piece together the logic behind each challenge.

Importantly, the game never assumes advanced mathematical knowledge. Early puzzles focus on recognizing shapes and counting sides before moving into basic arithmetic concepts such as addition, multiplication, and division, as well as spatial reasoning. The gradual difficulty curve prevents the experience from becoming overwhelming.

The inclusion of Sci’s hint system is another welcome addition. Collectible apples allow players to request guidance without revealing solutions outright. It strikes a smart balance between accessibility and the satisfaction of solving a difficult puzzle independently.

Learning Through Discovery

What sets Néro & Sci ∫ Integral Edition apart from many educational titles is its commitment to helping players arrive at conclusions naturally.

Rather than presenting textbook explanations, the game teaches through interaction. A puzzle involving geometric shapes might require players to identify angle relationships. Another challenge may use pressure plates and numbered blocks to illustrate multiplication principles. The solutions emerge through experimentation instead of memorization.

Souris-Lab’s efforts have earned support from the Institute for Research on Mathematics Education in Lyon, and that endorsement feels justified. The educational elements complement the gameplay rather than interrupt it.

Replayability also receives considerable attention. Completing levels rewards Light Coins, which can be invested into skill upgrades that enhance movement and utility. Revisiting stages to uncover missed secrets, unlock characters, or improve performance extends the experience well beyond its estimated 20-hour runtime.

Local cooperative play adds another layer of enjoyment. One player controls Néro while the other assumes the role of Sci, creating opportunities for communication and teamwork. For younger audiences playing alongside parents or friends, this mode can transform problem-solving into a shared activity.

Colorful Presentation With Room to Grow

Visually, Heméide is vibrant and inviting. The environments feature abstract designs composed of geometric shapes and bold colors, reinforcing the game’s mathematical identity without sacrificing personality.

Character animations are charming, and the soundtrack complements the adventure with an appropriately whimsical tone. The improved user interface and revised save systems introduced in this edition further enhance the overall experience.

Combat remains the weakest aspect of the package. Enemy encounters serve as occasional obstacles, but they lack the depth and creativity found within the puzzle design. Thankfully, battles never dominate the experience long enough to become a major distraction. Though it could just be removed, or been made a better use of within a puzzle or something challenging to keep kids constantly engaged as well.

Journey to Learn
Players seeking a challenging puzzle platformer will find plenty to appreciate here. Those hoping to sharpen their logical reasoning skills may discover that learning can be every bit as rewarding as reaching the end credits.

Clever puzzle design that encourages experimentation and logical thinking
Educational concepts are integrated naturally into the gameplay
Over 20 hours of content with replay value through skill progression
No advanced math knowledge required to enjoy or complete the adventure
Cons
Combat encounters lack the creativity found in the puzzle mechanics
Players looking for a traditional action platformer may find the pace slower than expected
